Quick read
  • Marco Rubio said Trump will attend NATO's July summit in Ankara, according to Anadolu's report from June 3.
  • NATO's official summit page says the next leaders summit will be held in Türkiye on July 7-8, 2026, with Ankara named as the host city.
  • Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had also said Trump planned to attend, but the stronger public signal now comes from Rubio.

President Donald Trump will attend NATO's July leaders summit in Ankara, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, according to Anadolu Agency.

The report matters because it moves the story beyond Turkish expectation and into a public statement from Trump's own secretary of state. NATO's official calendar separately confirms that the alliance's next summit will be held in Türkiye on July 7-8, 2026, and says the next summit will be in Ankara.

What happened

Anadolu reported on June 3 that Rubio said Trump would participate in the Ankara summit and described the meeting as potentially one of the most important in NATO's history because alliance obligations and reforms need to be addressed.

That follows a June 2 Anadolu report from Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who said during a Bloomberg TV interview that, as far as Ankara knew, Trump planned to attend. The clean update is that the attendance signal is no longer only coming from Turkish officials.

What NATO confirms

NATO's own summit page says the last summit was held in The Hague on June 24-25, 2025, and that the next one will be held in Türkiye on July 7-8, 2026. The same NATO page says the next summit will be in Ankara.

NATO summits are meetings of the North Atlantic Council at the level of heads of state and government. They are used for strategic decisions, alliance direction, enlargement issues, major policy declarations and crisis coordination.

Why this summit is sensitive

The Ankara summit is already expected to be tense because of the Trump administration's pressure on European allies, questions over future U.S. force posture, and the wider dispute over how much of the alliance's burden should fall on Washington.

Rubio's framing points to that pressure. If Trump attends, the summit becomes the main stage for his NATO argument: higher defense commitments, less European dependence on U.S. capabilities, and clearer alliance obligations in crises.

There is also a regional layer. Türkiye is hosting the meeting while Ankara is trying to balance its role inside NATO with its own diplomacy around Russia, Ukraine, the Middle East and Iran. That makes the host country politically relevant, not just logistical.

What is confirmed and what is not

Confirmed: NATO has scheduled the next summit for July 7-8, 2026 in Türkiye, with Ankara named by NATO as the host city. Confirmed: Anadolu reports Rubio saying Trump will attend and calling the summit highly important. Confirmed: Fidan previously said Trump planned to attend.

Not confirmed in the public source trail at publication time: a fresh White House travel advisory or final presidential itinerary. Presidential travel can change, so the strongest wording is "Rubio says Trump will attend," not "Trump has arrived" or "the White House has published the trip schedule."

What to watch next

Watch for a White House schedule entry, a NATO media advisory, Turkish accreditation details, and whether Trump seeks a bilateral meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan around the summit.

The clean read: the summit date and location are official NATO facts. Trump's attendance is now publicly stated by Rubio and echoed by Turkish officials, but the final travel schedule should still be checked when the White House posts it.

NoDechev status: confirmed NATO summit date/location; senior U.S. official says Trump will attend. Awaiting final White House travel schedule.
