Quick read
  • Romania’s Defence Ministry says a drone entered Romanian airspace overnight on May 28-29 and crashed onto the roof of a residential apartment building in Galați.
  • A follow-up Romanian Defence Ministry update said early information showed the full payload of a Russian-origin Geran-2 drone exploded on impact.
  • Two people were injured and taken to hospital. Romania informed NATO allies and requested faster transfer of anti-drone capabilities.

A Russian drone crossed into Romanian airspace and crashed into an apartment building in Galați during Russia’s overnight attack on Ukraine, according to Romania’s Defence Ministry.

The incident happened during the night of May 28 to 29, when Romania says Russia resumed drone attacks against civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine near the Danube border. Romanian radar tracked a drone inside national airspace as far as the southern area of Galați, where it crashed onto the roof of a residential block and started a fire.

What happened

Romania scrambled two F-16 aircraft from the 86th Air Base at Fetești at 01:19, supported by an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter. The Defence Ministry said the pilots were authorized to engage targets for the duration of the alert, while RO-Alert messages were sent to Tulcea, Galați and Brăila counties.

Emergency, police, intelligence and Interior Ministry teams responded at the scene. In a later Romanian-language update, the Defence Ministry said preliminary information indicated that the entire payload of a Russian-origin Geran-2 drone exploded at impact.

The two injured people were transported to the Galați County Emergency Clinical Hospital, the ministry said. AP and Reuters-based reports said the injuries were not described as life-threatening in the initial updates.

Why the wording matters

This is a serious violation of NATO member Romania’s airspace, but the strongest verified wording is not that Russia launched a declared attack on Romania. The confirmed chain is more specific: the drone was part of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, entered Romanian airspace, and crashed into a Romanian residential building.

That distinction matters because early social posts tend to turn a border incident into a clean “NATO attacked” headline. Romania’s own language is sharp, but still framed around airspace violation, regional security risk and the spillover danger from Russia’s attacks on Ukraine.

Romania’s response

Romania’s Foreign Ministry called the incident a grave and irresponsible escalation by Russia, according to Agerpres and AP reporting. The ministry said Romania informed NATO allies and the NATO secretary general, and requested measures to speed the transfer of anti-drone capabilities to the country.

Romania also said it would take necessary diplomatic measures in response to what it described as a serious breach of international law and Romanian airspace.

What is confirmed

Confirmed: a drone entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar, crashed on a residential block in Galați, caused a fire, and injured two people. Romania’s Defence Ministry later identified it as a Russian-origin Geran-2 from the preliminary investigation.

Still developing: the full technical reconstruction of the drone’s path, whether electronic warfare or Ukrainian air defences affected its trajectory, and what diplomatic or NATO-level response follows beyond Romania’s request for faster anti-drone support.

NoDechev rating: verified developing incident. The official Romanian source trail confirms the drone crash and Russian-origin Geran-2 identification; intent and NATO response should be reported carefully until further official updates.
